The Drawing Room
The Drawing Room was once the Refectory of the monastery. This room has had several remodellings over the centuries, most recently by Sir John Soane, who created the enfilade which runs from the conservatory and through several rooms, bringing a great deal of light into the house.
The Round Room
This is the famous Round Room. Designed by Sir John Soane, it is considered one of his outstanding achievements with a mural painted by Robert Lenckiewicz regarded as his masterpiece. It has to be seen to be believed.
The House Carpenter's Shop
This is one of the many below stairs rooms. Once used by a super 'odd job' man, the house carpenter and an apprentice would repair furniture, replace sash window cords and undertake the many jobs needed to keep the place in one piece.
The Conservatory Annex
This conservatory annex was designed by Sir John Soane when he came and transformed the Tudor ground floor quarters from "a set of rude rooms into a fine set of apartments" , 1st Lord Eliot 1801. Much of the glass in the doorway is of the original 18th century centrifically spun glass.
The Big Dining Room
This is the Big Dining Room, shown in preparation for a large dinner party. The room is some 100 yards from the kitchen. Every year Michael Howells, the acclaimed Production Designer, works his magic in this room and creates an intriguing installation using objects found in the house.
The Morning Room
The Morning Room with 19th Century French damask wall coverings is our ‘front room’, as can be seen from the general bric a brac and stuff lying about. It has many fine pictures and some museum quality furniture.
