The English Watercolour Landscape with Ian Heard (

22nd June 2015

The English Watercolour Landscape with Ian Heard (

Illustrator, painter and designer; Ian Heard FRSA was born in Cornwall and grew up in his family’s boat yard on the River Fal. A drawer from childhood, he studied illustration and graphics and worked initially in Cornwall before moving to Oxford to pursue a career in design and advertising.

He established his own studio in the Cotswolds in the late 1980’s in order to offer his clients a more bespoke service. His work has been commissioned by many corporate clients and for many of the UK’s leading publishers.

Ian will be running a workshop for small numbers in the Georgian Orangery at Port Eliot. He will be taking you through the principals and process of watercolour, how to use the medium most effectively and how to achieve better painting with planning, technique, drawing, tonal studies and use of colour.

No experience necessary but please do bring your own materials. Ian suggests an A3 watercolour pad and basic watercolour box with a selection of brushes and a water container, along with your personal kit including a folding chair or stool, sun hat or waterproofs. If you have an easel, it may be useful.

The workshop will be followed by a delicious English Picnic lunch provided by the head cook at Port Eliot, a tour of the garden with head gardener Mike Warr and entry into the house in the afternoon.
